PROPOSED GRANDSTAND

IN VtCTORiA PARK

RAISING THE MONEY,

• The Town Clerk reported to last night’s meeting of the Domain Board that he had received a cheque for £l l7, representing the surplus from th e Jubilee Celebrations, and that there was a sum*of £4O still to come. The Mayor (Mr J. W. McMillan) said that at a Jubilee meeting before the Jubilee celebrations._ started it was agreed that any surplus from the celebrations should go to form the nucleus of a fund for the erection of a grandstand "in Victoria Park, it would be foolish to dot anything until there was a substantial sum in hand, and he thought that sum should be £IOOO. They should erect a grandstand in keeping with the park as it stood to-day—something which would not be discordant with the rest of the; park. A grandstand in the park would foe a constant source of revenue, to thy Board. If there was cover people would attend football matches, wet or fine. Debentures to the extent of £BSO were available for sale, and if they were sold there would, be sufficient money in hand to justify a start being made on the grandstand. The debentures 1 only carried interest to the extent off per cent and it might be necessary to take steps to 1 se© that the debentures returned 5;!- per cent. He suggested that a sub-committee be set up to* report to next meeting on the best method of raising the necessary money.

In reply to Mr P. Thomson the Town Clerk stated that it was about 1922 when he and Mr Thomson had previously canvassed for th e sale of debentures for Victoria Park.

Mr 0. R, Finnerty thought that if the) Board had power to increase the interest by J per cent they might see their wav to increase if still further to make the debenture® more attractive-

Or. Harkness said he was pleased to helar the Mayor’s remarks. He be. lieved that the grandstand would return 15 per cent, on the amount, expended. He felt sure, that an arrangement could be made with the Rugby Union whereby the whole of the revenue from the stand could be handed to the Board. The Mayor, Mr Thomson, Ors. Moore. Harkness and Ward were appointed to report to next meeting on the best method of raising the l money. TRADESMEN’S DONATION. Mr H. Burmoster .secretary of the Stratford Tradespeople’s Executive forwarded a cheque for £2B 10s Gel, being unexpended, balance of the decorations fund for the Jubilee, raised by the. Executive. The Executive. The Executive desired, he said, that the sum should be devoted to the fund for erecting a grandstand in Victoria Park. “On uehalf °f my executive,” the writer concluded. “I also tender their sincere thanks and. appreciation to the Conncil and the stall for the valuable assistance) given by all towards the 'decorative display at the Jubilee celebrationis..
