CRITICISM OF POLICE

PROLONGED EX ft AIV! I NATION. TAXI DRIVER'S EIGHT HOURS (Special to Post.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The methods of the police in investigating the Bur word murder case are being strongly criticised here. In connection with the examination of a taxi driver at the police station for eight hours, a correspondent, “British Pair Play,’' 1 writes to the “Star” .suggesting that, this calls for very serious _ investigation. The writer says; 1 The police have th© ’ight to examine and ask questions of any who is suspected of a crime, but " is incredible that legitimate questioning could, la.st over a penoi ~ J eight hours. One can hardly bclimv that this could occur in am country in the world other than in America. Doubtless the answer of the police will ho the usual one that the taxi driver was under no compulsion to answer, and could have left the station at any time he wished. This is true if the man knew his kwal rights, huf-, sureIv it. is obvious that he did_ not know the position, because it is impossible to believe that a man would stay at the station for eight hours because he liked it.”
