SETTLED

■UiAPUXi STRIKE.

NORMAL CONDITIONS DU LI

Per Press Association. HAMILTON, June 18

Work way resumed at Arapuni at 7,30 a.m. to-day, following an agree-

ment reached last night, and normal conditions are again ruling. The trouble appears to be definitely settled. The agreement was reached after an hour’s conference, and was entirely unexpected by the majority of the camp. Actually the employers conceded the overtime claim involving 4s 9d, but had never refused to do so before the strike was set in motion. The employers took a firm stand because the tailing of a strike .was unconstitutional- and contrary to the workers’ agreement of 1925. Mr P. Halley, Conciliation Commissioner, and Mr T. 0. Bishop, a representative of the Employers’ Federation, waited at Arapuni and assisted to bring the parties together. It may be said that the men’s representatives admitted that the interpretation of the overtime clauses by the company had been right, but it had not been properly defined, however, and after a discussion with the company’s representatives they agreed to accept the definition of the terms of the clause in the builders’ and contractors’ labourers’ award (northern industrial district), which allows double time for work done between midnight and 6 a.m. if the workman has already worked during the day, and time and a half for work done between 6 a.m. and the ordinary time of starting work.
