The Wharelmia Social Club •- wfc holding a plain and fancy dress ball in the hall on Wednesday, 16th Jane. Good prizes will bo given for tho best ladies’ and gents’ fancy dress.

The proceeds of the football match between Stratford and Kaponga seniors. to be tomorrow afternoon, will be devoted to the Stratford Club’s gymnasium fund. Th© kick-off is at 2.45 P- m -

Mr Cyril Burton, organising secretary of the Methodist Young Men’s Bible Class Union, is visiting Taranaki, and will speak at the Stratford Methodist Church on Sunday evening, when it is expected that a par-, ticularly interesting service will be held.

The match between Stratford , and Ka.ponga. to-morrow will take plate at the Showgrounds, and not at Victoria Park. The match promises an interesting display of football as both teams are evenly matched, and as the proceeds will be divided between .the two clubs it is to be hoped that there will be, a large attendance'.

At the annual meeting of tlie layanaki Friesian Breeders’ Association it was decided to arrange for a Tarar naki exhibit of Friesian cattle at the next Koval Show. The various breeders have been circularised, and the replies received have been satisfactory.: The annuals to be exhibited null be viewed bv the Inspection Committee in the course of the next few days.

The Stratford Operatic Society held a most successiui pro;.at rehearsal of the Finale of Act I of "The Belle of New York" in the Town Hall Wednesday night. There was a good attendance of members, and everything went with a swing. The indications are that the Society will present a very good performance of the opera.

In a letter from the Wellington Rugby Union read at last night s meeting of the Taranaki Union it was stated that the former’s chief d.tticuity in arranging a trip to Taraiiaui, prior to their other engagements, was getting leave for players. “This question,” the letter proceeded,” is becoming very acute, with employers, and some players find that they would be. jeopardising their positions by asking for football leave too often.”

The practice of asking that names be withheld from publication is evidently not confined to the law courts for when the cases of two nortn Taranaki players who had been "ordered off” wer© being discussed by the Management Committee of the Rugby Union last night a member mentioned that a request had been received asking that names ,»e suppressed. “Oh, we have got to decide that sort of thing too have wS? Msaid another member, amidst laughter, whereupon Mr McLeod Humourously remarked; “We cannot do better than leave the matter to the discretion of the Press, as our late Chief Justice would gay.”

The most important part of tho v>ork in connection with the repairing of the weir at the hydro station has now been done. The greater part of the concrete work has been completed, and all that remains to be done arc the filling in with boulders under the weir and certain repairs to tho woodwork. Numerous complaints have been made by Broadway North residents because of a horse which is per mi tied to- wander at large at nights in the locality. A chain is attached to tho animal and is dragged behind it,\ and several people have fallen over this. Last evening the chain was dragging right across the road, and there us no doubt, it i,s a source of danger.
