OPIUM RAID AT CITY CAFE

£3QO WORTH FOUND. PROPRIETOR CHARGED. Sydney, March 26. A raid was made on a city cafe yesterday, and 30 tin,s of opium, valued at about £3OO, were found. The raid was organised by Inspector Clifford, of the Customs Department, who was assisted by a squadron of u dozen or so officials. During the afternoon these took up various positions in the vicinity of the Tientsin Cafe, Campbell Street, and at a signal given at 4 p.m. tiiey .entered the cafe from front, rear, and side doors. The appeartmco of the officer* caused a hubbub among the Chinese, and other occupants of the premises’ and a crowd rapidly gathered outside. In the false bottom of a chair, upon which a .Chinese was sitting, eight tins of the drug were found. Next, examining the Chair to which the Chinese had moved, the officers found still more tins stowed away iu the woodwork. ' fn an empty case they found about a dozen other tins, ail full, while a, number of tins were discovered which laid been planted singly in cunning! vdesigned hiding places. Charlie Tin, a Chinese, later was charged at the Water Police Court, with having had opium on hi s premises. He will appear at the Central Police Court to-day.
