N.S.W. DOUBLE TRAGEDY.
Sydney, October 28,
A double tragedy is reported from Tumberuanba, in the Albuiry . district, where the bodies of Patrick Wolff and a woman, supposed to be Amy .Turner', were found lying together with bullet wounds in the heads. Apparently the woman was first kUled and then Wolff committed suicide, pulling the tigger with his toe. No details are available.
DE VALERA UNDER ARREST.
London. October 28.
I)e Valera was conveyed to prison in .the "Black Maria,." The crowd booed him outside the station and tfhere were some cries, of ''Put a bullet into him." On"." the presence of the police prevented De Valera from being mobbed. It is; expected that he will be detained till after the election and later will be charged under the Civil Powers *Yet, under which he is liable to the maximum of two years' imprisonment.
PRICE OF TEA ADVANCES.
Sydney, October 28.
A number of wholesale tea. houses advanced the price of tea by twopence per pound. It is understood that mosfc i if not all the others, will make a similar advance. The* causes given for the- increase are the higher prices ruling in the 'producing centres, the exchange rate and the keener general demand.
AUSTRALIAN LABOR SCANDAL.
Sydney. October 28
The hearing of the charges of alleged false pretences against William Joseph McCarthy and Cornelius Cullen has commenced. It is alleged that they represented to Mr C. H. Murphy, a member of the Legislative Assembly, that they had" the '. power, and were in a, position to prevent iiis exclusion from the Australian Labor Party, thereby attempting to obtain L'oO from him with intent, to defraud him.
Murphy gave evidence that he attended a meeting of a sub-committee of the executive of the Australian Laboi' Party in connection with a protest which hail beon lodged regarding his alleged contravention of certain rules. Subsequently he attended a meeting at which he was asked to show cause why he should not be expelled from the party. The meeting was adjourned. Afterwards he received a telephone message which led him to interview the police. They, gave certain advice, in accordance with which he arranged to meet Cullen and McCarthy. A member of the central executive was also present at the meeting, at which it was alleged that an. undertaking was readied that 'the balloting be so arranged that Murphy's expulsion from the party would he rescinded, contingent, upon the payment of £SO. Murphy then arranged to meet Cullen and McCarthy in the presence of the police.
