The highest fines ever imposed in a Canadian court, accompanied by sentences in the penitentiary, were imposed on two leading citizens who were convicted at Toronto of graft against their own Government. The Hon. Peter Smith, member of the Cabinet of Premier Drury’s farmer Government two years ago and Emilias Jervis were sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and fined 600,000 dollars each. Payment of this hugd amount will break Smith, but Jervis will have something left, for ho is a millionaire several times over. Jervis is Canada’s leading yachtsman and entertained the Prince of Wales several years ago. He' is the head of the largest bond dealers in the Dominion. The jury decided that he marketed Ontario Government bonds for ten million dollars, obtaining an illegal rake off of S per cent., besides his ordinary commission. It was shown that ho divided the money with Smith, • who gave turn the order on behalf of the Government.
