THE RIPPLE DISASTER

EVIDENCE AT INQUIRY. Per Press Association. Wellington, September 13. At the inquiry into the Ripple disaster the captain of the Mararoa gave evidence that visibility was so bad that they could not see half a mile. It was about four hours after getting the message that the Mara.roa was off Palliser. it was the quickest possible time consistent with safety. The Maori could steam four miles faster than the Maiaroa. He doubted whether the Maori could have got to Palliser in such weather sooner than the Mararoa. Be did not think it would have made any difference if the Hippie had lieen equipped with wireless, as under the conditions it was impossible to pick up Palliser. The inquiry was adjourned till Wednesday.
