SOME GREAT FIELDS. A more generous response is yearly being made bv owners and the public generally on the occasion of the trot ting events nt Hawera on Easter Monday, until the meeting has grown to the extent of being the recognised metropolitan meeting of the province as far as this class of sport is concerned. At the ninth annual tot alia ator meeting yesterday, this feature was strikingly illustrated. The attendance was representative of all paits of Taranaki, and there were many visitors from distant parts who were struck with the tygh-class nature of the meeting. As to the standard of the competitors, there is no doubt that the 1098 fixture eclipsed the others in the history of the Club, Taking all the circumstances into consideration—not forgetting the fine weather, and the absence of any serious accident to mar Dm cnfovmcnf of the ‘President CMr B. McCaHby) and vbis capable set of stewards arid .pfficiajs; ; s are to he ImaHiiy congratutaied op their efforts Mr TjJ. 'Av.-AV^«iy?^»’aA'^n^|?n , Rident , R worthv lieutenant in looking aHer the general interests of natrons.
Special mention .chouP l bp made of the oxrollpnt judgment displayed hv ■flip dub’s bandicapper. Mr F. C. Tbomns (Christehurcb). He concealed the winners so well that the first favorite won on few occasions, hut with the exception of one half-cen-tury dividend there was no other two-figure price paid by the totalisator all day. - ■' •■< ■■■ i - Mr J. Gray in his capacity, as honorary judge had several very close finishes to decide, and it was worthy of remark that he made no mistakes in hoisting the numbers of the placed horses. At a race meeting of this nature, there is not a harder job to carry out successfully than that starter, and in Mr A. Morse the Club has an official who did excellent service yesterday, in fact with such large fields iji> manipulate the wonder is that he dame out of the ordeal so well. The minor duties oi the meeting were-earned out by" the' respective officers without any trouble, while ihe real machinery of the mauagei .ent under the control of Mr V. B. ■Stratton, the Club’s energetic and capable secretary, ran without a break from stait to finish. Mr J. it. Conigan, M.P„ is a life member of the Club in view of his generous assistance as an active member both as an owner and a committeeman, and there are over ioU financial members, whose ramifications and interests extend throughout the province and largely make for the success of the gathering. The Hnwera Oilmens’ Band played a nice selection of items during the day. Dustin's Ltd., the well-known caterers, supplied the luncheon and refreshments. The hotel booth was under the management of Mr Jurj, of Hawera. The Gup provided a great field, but if was marred by two accidents which interfered with the chances of several of the competitors. After the presentation of the Cup valued at 20 sovß. ; presented by Mr J. 11. Corrigan,.M.l*., to the winner of the Cup, Mr J. T. .F. Thomson’s brown gelding Ramaroa (Wildwood Junior—Winnipeg) trained and ridden by Mr W, Willetts, of Hawera, cheers were given for Mr Corrigan’s Man-o’-War, which started off 240 yards behind the limit horses and ran into second place in good style. Speculation was brisk, the totalisc.tor handling £22,709, as compared with £16,922 last year, an increase of £5787. RESULTS.
