PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEES UNAVAILABLE. Christchurch, December 22. ■ The possibility of liberating the Public Works employees for harvest was mentioned to the Hon. W. Fraser this morning, who said it was not feasible. There were only 1750 employed in, Public Works and the number was steadily diminishing. The department could uo with another 1000 men in view of the necessities of the settlers, and if the country's produce was to l)e get to market, the roads must be kept open.
