Mr, Lloyd George stated that he refused, to enter into peace negotiation without the knowledge of Germany’s terms. He every word that France and Russia had uttered. Britain would formally answer Germany in a few days. It had been decided to recognise M. Venizelos’ agents. The Government would ask the people for further sacrifices to be made in regard to their food and also ex- ( cess profits; they were appointing a Director of Military and Civil National Service; and they fvould ask Parliament for. further powers if the man supply was inadequate.

Mr Lloyd George said the Government would give clear and definite support to the Franco-Russian answer, which had already been given to Germany’s peace proposals. The Allies had exchanged their views on the Note, and it had been decided that peace was impossible without the fullest restoration and reparation being made by Germany. The time would come when the Allies would mbre formally consult the Dominions on the war. An Imperial Conference would be held at an early date. FORECAST OF ALLIES’ REPLY. REPARATION TO BELGIUM. The Providence Journal states that the Allies ’reply to Germany will point out that the Allies will not consent to any parley until Germany has voluntarily withdrawn from Belgium, repaid all the fines levied, reimbursed Belgium for the destruction of hei ‘cities, had returned every deported Belgian. The reply will also declare the Allies’ conviction that the German proposals are fraudulent, being intended to create sentiment in favot of Germany. A wireless message from Berlin says that the Note contains most definite communications for guaranteeing a lasting peace, but is based on the firm conviction of Germany’s o rights and just claims, making it clear that the Central Powers do not want to annihilate or destroy anybody. The Kolnische Zeitung states: If the Entente refuses peace, the submarines will be given the word to go forward. No American will prevent us enforcing peace upon the Enemy, * when we want to negotiate it.

The United States Embassy has delivered the German Note to the French Government, It merely contains the text of Chancellor von Bethmann-Holl-weg’s speech on 12th December, without any concrete proposals.
