PERSONAL.
The Rev. F. W. Young, vicar of Devonport, left for Auckland last night. Mr W. Foster, who is at present headmaster of the Petone District High School, has been appointed headmaster of the Clyde Quay School, in succession to Mr W. T. Grundy. Mr and Mrs F. S. Johns, of New Plymouth, leave to-day, en route for Sydney, where they will spend several weeks’ holiday.
The Rev. A. H. Colville, vicar of St. Mary’s, returned to New Plymouth last evening. He was accompanied by Mrs Colville.
The death of Mr J. C. Davies, at New Plymouth on Monday, removes another old settler. He had spent practically the whole of his 73 years in Taranaki, taking part in the Maori war as a member of the Mounteds, and earning distinction for his success in despatch-carrying.
We (Manaia Witness) understand that in the will of the late Mr Daniel Hughes there are only two bequests, one to his grand daughter, at present at school at Wanganui, of £SOO, and the other of his gold watch to his eldest son, Mr D. J. Hughes. With these exceptions there is an equal distribution of the property. Should, however, any diflicu'tv arise in 'ts division bev-veen any two of the beneficiaries, both having a preference for the same, properly; the will stipulates that 'they must “toss for it”—a rough and ready method characteristic of the sporting instincts of the late Mr Daniel Hughes.
