REMARKABLE ACCIDENT.

HAND SKEWERED TO SHOULDER A remarkable accident occurred to Mr Samuel Dennis, contractor, of Northcote (states an Australian paper). Mr Dennis undertook to conduct an experiment with a new explosive invented. Mr Duncan, manager of the Commonwealth Match Factory, and he decided to test its power in a quarry. A hole was drilled into the x-ock, and Dennis was tamping a charge of the explosive home, using a broom handle as the tamper.

Apparently Mi- Dennis overdid the tamping operation, for the charge exploded, and drove the bx-oom handle backwards through Mr Dennis’s hand and through the fleshy part of his right shoulder, just above the biceps, skewering the hand back to the shoulder. Mr Dennis was also knocked down and bruised.

He was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in a serious condition. The broom handle had to be sawn across between the back of the unfortunate man’s hand and his shoulder before it could be withdrawn.

Mr Dennis, who suffered. severely with shock, is now showing signs of improvement.
