The oil steamer Vedra grounded at Barrow, and an explosion ignited the cargo. Two were saved and 34 lost. The benzine reached the engine-room x and burning oil poured into the sea. cutting off escape. STATUE TO CAPTAIN COOK. (Received 9.55 \ a,m>.') . Melbourne, December 9. A statue of Captain Cook was unveiled at St. Kilda. It was presented by Mr Andrew Stenhouso, a local resident. The statue stands on a granite column overlooking the sea.
N.S.W. POLITICS. (Received 9.55 a.m.) Sydney, December 9. In the Assembly Mr Holman (Premier), has given notice of a motion for to-morrow authorising the Government to negotiate with the. Norton Griffiths Co., which is a British firm, to carry out during 1916 reproductive works to the extent of four million. The motion declared that the unprecedented character of the financial situation necessitated the proposal. The Council adversely criticised the Wheat Seizdfife) Bill Amendment, and moved to make a fixed price of six shillings. The debate was adjourned.
