Allen to a reporter this morning. A man surreptitiously entered the outer yard of the Ocean Beach battery and was immediately challenged and promptly lay down. Another challenge caused him to bolt, and as he ran the sentry fired twice, but the man got away. REINFORCEMENTS. Dunedin, November 26. A further batch of reinforcements left for Trentham this morning. These included several University men, who were' enthusiastically farewelled. SETTLER'S HANDSOME GIFT. Napier, November 26. A Hawke's Bay settler who desires anonymity has donated £IOOO to the British Relief Fund. SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY. Marton, November 26. " A garden party held at "Overton" yesterday, the residence of Mr H. F. Arkwright, in aid of the Belgian Funds, was well attended. Despite showery weather there was an attendance of 1000. The function was a | great success, and the side.shows did splendid business. The profit is estimated at over £3OO.
