There is no further, trace of Percy Jones, lost at Cape Runaway, and't is feared that his body will never be recovered owing to the great quantity ol earth under which he is presumably buried. Jones had a narrow escape from being engulfed in a landslide at Mehgatu during the flood of 1906, when Tilfen’s house was canied away. Opotiki reported last eening that White Island w r as belching black sxhoke —a very unusual thing. STEAMER SHAKEN FROM STEM TO STERN. SENSATION BEGGARS DESCRIPTION. ANOTHER SHOCK AT TOKOMARU BAY. Gisborne, Ocober 8. Whffi the stea*“*«■• Mokqia was off Cape Runaway yesterday morning the vessel was suddenly brought to almost a dead stop and trembled violently. The first conclusion was that the propeller had been stripped or that the steamer had struck some submerged object, but Captain Drewettc, knowing that he was in 800 fathoms of water and 10 miles off the land, and finding no damage to the vessel, concluded that the earthquake was responsible. The vessel’s masts rocked and the whole ship quivered from end to end, the sensation beggaring description. The steamer was then 30 miles h'nm White Island. Tokomaru Bay reports a further slight shock at 1.30 this morning, but no further damage was done.
