Jovseph Earle Hermann, a financier, was charged at the Court to-day With uttering a forged promissory note for £2689 15s 6d. The prosecution alleged that there were other notes, supposed to bo forgeries, totalling nearly £42,000. Bail was refused, and the hearing was adjourned till September 29.
AUSTRALIA AT THE PANAMA
EXPOSITION.
Melbourne, September 22
It has been decided to persevere with the representation of Australia, at the Panama Exhibition, on modified lines. New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland only will participate. The total cost will be £30,000, of which the Commonwealth finds £12,000.
BIC FIRE ON SHOWGROUNDS. Melbourne, September 22. A fire broke out in the main grand stand on tho showground, on which there were over a thousand people. They quickly cleared. Before the firo brigade arrived from a town five miles distant the firo had spread to the Exhibition portion, amidst great excitement in the large crowds. Owing to the poor water supply, the fire was not suppressed until 18 structures, including the industrial pavilion and gveat quantities of valuable exhibits, besides the grand stand costing £7OOO had been destroyed. Tho total damago is estimated at from £15,000 to £17,000.
