Sensational Arrest.

A DRAPER APPREHENDED. THEFT CHARGES PREFERRED AND PENDING. A good deal of activity was noticeable about the police force yesterday afternoon and people in Broadway were noon aware that something out of the ordinary was afoot. Something of a sensation was caused when it became known that Arch. W. Hawles, the Broadway draper, had been taken into custody by the police on charges of theft. He appeared at the Court this morning before Mr G. W. K. Kenrick, S.M., and was charged with having on or about June 22nd stolon a motor car tyre and a motor car tube valued at £7 17s, the property of Mr Newton

King. Constable Bleasel applied, on behalf of the police, for a remand for a week. M r J. R. L. Stanford, who appeared for accused, applied tor bail. Accused had been given bail on the previous evening—self in £IOO and one surety of £IOO.

Constable Bleasel said there were a number of other charges against accused, involving an amount much higher than that represented by the charge now before the Court. The S.M. (to counsel): Is he a resident of Stratford? Mr Stanford: Yes. He is a draper of long standing and has never been before a Court before. The S.M. fixed bail at self £IOO and two sureties of £SO. and accused was remanded till next Friday. ,
