A correspondent writes stating that people may not recognise the weed which the Department of Agriculture calls spiderwort, as he believes it is more generally known as inkwort.

The annual general meeting of members of the Stratford Bowling Club is to be held in the Borough Council Chambers at 8 o’clock this evening. An invitation to attend is extended to intending members.
At tbe fortnightly meeting of the 1.0.0. F., A.C., Pouatu Lodge, held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Whaiigamomona, on Monday (states a correspondent), the chair was taken by Bro. H. Montgomery, P.G. live now candidates were initiated into the mysteries of the Order. It has been decided to open a branch of the Order at Tahora, where meetings will be held every mouth.
The thirty couples who took the floor for dancing at the Fire Brigade Hall last evening thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The music was played by Mrs Bianchi and Mrs Hancock obliged with an extra. A tasty supper was provided by the Ladies’ Committee. Tho management are so well pleased with the popularity of these weekly fixtures that they intend to keep them going until further notice.
It is usually’ claimed that in New Zealand news is spread as quickly and thoroughly as anywhere else, but it is stated that a man from the hinterland heard for the first time of the outbreak of war when on a visit to Eltham.a few days ago, which -shows that there are still places frequented by the “bush-whacker” and others of the genus pioneer which can still he described as “far from the madding crowd.”
An extraordinary general ~ meeting of shareholders of the Midhirst Dairy Co. was held yesterday to consider the question of making a contribution towards the Empire Defence Fund, and on the motion of Mr Joseph calash, seconded by Mr A. Simons, the following resolution was carried: —“That this Company make a monthly contribution to the Empire Defence F und of i per cent, on the net value of butter shipped while the war continues, such contribution to cease should a war tax be declared.”
The railway working account for the four weeks ended August 15th, pub* lished in the Gazette last night, shows the following figuresßevenue. North Island (1914) £155,304, (1913) £143,992; South Island, £127,784 and £123,230; totals, £283,088 and £267,222. Expenditure.—North . Island (1914) £118,754, (1913) £118,470; South Island, £99,330 and £101,199; totals, £219,083 and £219,670. The percentage of the revenue expended to date in the current year is 74.50 m the ’North Island ! and '69.11' in the South Island. The figures tor the corresponding portion of last year weio respectively 72.6 and Vi.G.
