Brussels for the purpose of cutting Antwerp’s communications witli Osteinl. mid the coast towns. The Germans burnt villages on their way. Tlicre was stern lighting between .'salines an-.l Termondo, the Belgians showing great elan. When the Germans occupied Termiimic the Belgians cut the dykes, flooding the district and completely surprising the Germans, who did not expect such a sacrifice. The Germans, when the telegram was sent, were waist-deep in water, working heroically to pull out the guns, under heavy lire from the outermost Antwerp forts, the Germans losing heavily. (Termondo, or Dendermonde, is a fortified town, about 17 miles east of Ghent, and about 20 miles north-west of Brussels).

The German Governor at Brussels is forcing civil guards, though disarmed,
to assist in defence works. This is a fresh violation of international law.
A German aeroplane bombarded Ghent, also Feloo. No one was hurt, hut some damage was caused to property. Another was forced to descend at Osteml, and was captured.
Belgian engineers have flooded several iistricts, ospeciallv about Malines.
General Dnfour, in order to prevent scarcity of food, is freeing Antwerp of war refugees.' They actually exceed tin 1 city’s normal population. ■ Indications are that the German vandalism in other cities is with the deliberate intention to drive the inhabitants into Antwerp, Imping that later, in the event of a siege, the city would speedily capitulate from famine.
