GERMANS ACTIVITY ON THE EASTERN FRONT.
Petrograd, September 4
Fresh German troop* are daily appearing at the eastern front the Landsturm replacing them on the western field. Twelve 42-centimetre guns have also been brought, which* were responsible for General Samsonoff’s reverse. There are indications that, after tJio Russian counter-attacks leading to a German retreat, the Germans are now transferring their defence from the Thorn-to-Cracow front to the PosenCracow line. The abandonment of the defence of ( the 4 line of the River Warta (Warthe) represents a gf.in'tu the Russians, inasmuch us westward from the Warta to the -Oder the Gorman front is entirely Exposed. .!}(•}; ‘ •;
