BELGIANS AND GERMANS LOSE HEAVILY AT MALINES.
Amsterdam, August 27.
A fierce battle at alines (14 miles from Antwerp) raged all day, fresh German troops coming from the eastward. The enemy was repulsed on the southern side of the canal. The Belgians made desperate bayonet charges, and at places bodies were piled to a height of live or six feet. The greater part of Malines was destroyed. The Belgians blew up part of the town to enable the fort to use its guns effectively. it is estimated that the Germans lost 2000. The Belgians also lost severely.

Louvain Station (east of Brussels) has been transformed into a huge repair shop. Elsewhere -there are great bakeries, kitchens, • and slaughterhouses.
The Germans leave no troops upon the lines of communication.
THE QUEEN OF BELGIUM.

The Queen and her children have refused to leave. The Germans require them to report themselves every three hours.
ROUNDING UP WOMEN AND CHILDREN. UHLANS ANNIHILATED. London, August 27. Uhlan raiders from Mens crossed the frontier on Monday evening. They rounded up the women and children and convalescents with revolvers, and forced them to march all night through French' villages, striking terror into the peasants. They burnt the Town Hall at Soma in, and tore up a length >f the railway canal close to Bouchiin. At four o’clock in the morniVi,. :hey met a French artillery regiment, uid a four hours’ fight ensued, which innihilated the Uhlans. Some British wounded were taken to,the base hospital near Boulogne. The French wound,'d states that the Germans at Charleroi always used fixe same methods. They mounted 'Maxims on ridges, with deep trenches. The. French carried these* death-traps at the'pdinb of the bayonet. • ■

(Received 9.10 a.m.) Paris, August 27
2500 Belgian refugees, mostly women uid children, have arrived in a doplorible condition. The Government is sending them to assist in harvesting in the provinces.
