London, August 24, In response to Entente representations Turkey has freed the skipping in the Dardanelles.
Turkey has not satisfied the Allies respecting the Goohen and insists that she must retain some of the German engineers and stokers.
It is obvious that Germany is applying the greatest pressure to force Turkey to compromise herself, believing Britain and France will be afraid to make war on Turkey because the latter might stir up the Mussulmans in India and Algeria.
ASSURANCES GIVEN TO ALLIES’ AMBASSADORS.
Constantinople, August 24
The Porte has reassured the British Ambassador of Turkey’s intention to
ramain neutral. The British, French, and Russian Ambassadors assured Turkey the maintenance of the Ottoman Jlmpire is the basis of the present policy in the near East.
The question of the legality of the transfer of the Goeben and Breslau was not raised, but the Ambassadors insist that the officers and crews must depart. Turkey desires to keep a number of the engineers, mechanics, and stokers to teach the Turkish crews how to run the turbines.
