An official statement is made that Japan has issued an ultimatum to 'Germany. The ultimatum informs GAnany that it /is important and necessary, to remove causes of disturbance of the peace in the Far East, and to safeguard the general interests under the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. Accordingly Japan advises Germany to withdraw her warships of all kinds from Chino-Japanese waters, and to disarm those that she is unable to withdraw; and,i secondly, to deliver to Japan by September, unconditionally, her entire territory •t Kiaoehao for eventual restoration to China. . t r.t.

' It' is also feared that Japan may seize German Samoa and insis t on its retentio a, which would be bitterly resented in America, with a view of its strategic importance in connection with the Panama Canal. The Japanese Ambassador at Washington informed the United States that every American interest would he safeguarded. The United States regarded Japan’s promise to restore Kaiochao to China «s satisfactory.
