HOCKEY. ENGLISH LADIES’ TEAM. [Pbb Press Association.] Hastings, August 8. The English ladies’ hockey team played the third match of the tour to-day, when they defeated Hawke’s Bay by three goals to nil. About 5000 people were present. In the first spell play was very even, and the home team held heir own. The homo team made desperate efforts to score in the final stages, and the visitors were hard pressed, but their defence was too sound. AUCKLAND DEFEAT CANTERBURY. ■0 qsnSny ‘puuppny In the New Zealand challenge shield match between Canterbury and Auckland, the holders, won by two goals to one. There was an attendance of about 1500. FOOTBALL. UNIVERSITY DEFEAT CLIFTON. Auckland, August 9. University, Auckland’s champion team, defeated Clifton, North Taranaki’s premier team, by 24 to 8. Brilliant play of the University backs proved Clifton’s undoing. \ THAMES v. AUCKLAND. Auckland, August 9. Thames and Auckland representatives played a drawn game at the Thames, each side scoring three points. For Thames, Crawford scored a try, whilst for Auckland Candy kicked a goal from a mark. N.Z.
