Brookes and Wilding defeated Schwengers and Powell iii the doubles, 6—4, 6—3, 6—4, this winning the contest. Although Brookes and Wilding won straight sets ; their victory was by no means uncontested. In the first set the Canadians led 4— l, when with a rally Australasia won. The set was characterised throughout by thrilling volley play. The game was somewhat impeded by the state of the courts, which were spongy on account of the rain and had to be dried with bath towels and brooms before the match.
Tho Canadians took the second, fourth and sixth games in the second set, 4—o/" 5—3, 4—l, also the first, third, seventh and ninth in the last set,7—s, 7—5, 5—4, B—6. The Australasians won the majority of their games on dashing service. As in the singles, the Canadians were again outclassed, but played better doubles. Brookes and Wilding frequently thrilled the crowd by their splendid service and volleying. u (

N.Z, COUNCIL RESIGNS

At a meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council last night the managemen committee announced that they had decided to retire from office, and would not seek re-election at the next annual meeting of the Council. The secretary and treasurer also announced that they were resigning. t A motion was proposed that no action of the delegates in the past could he construed to be in the nature of a want of confidence in the management committee, and that the committee be requested to reconsider the question of their resignation in a body. The motion, however, was ruled out of order, and the intention of the committee and officers to resign therefore stands.
AUCKLAND V. COUNTRY REPS.
Auckland, July 20,
The Auckland rep. team defeated the combined country team by four goals to one. This match ended the country week programme. Five sub-Association teams competed for the White Horse Cup, which was retained by the holders (Whangarei), after four days' play.
