H.M.N.Z.S. PHILOMEL.
Wellington, July 15. [Pee Press Association. I To-day the cruiser Philomel was taken over by the New Zealand Government to be used as a training ship. There was no ceremony in connection with the event, interesting as it was. This morning Commander Ballard came ashore and Captain Hall-Tliompson (Naval Adviser to the Government), proceeded on board' and hoisted his pennant,' and then formally reported himself to the Minister of Defence. From to-day the Philomel will be manned with British naval officers (who will receive Navy rates of pay) and a training (a skeleton) crew of Imperial Navy men. , These men will be paid the colonial rates of pay, and their duty will consist of training New Zealand recruits for the Navv.
