The outlook is more hopeful for a settlement of the afternoon shift strike. It is stated that the masters offered the miners twenty per cent, above the ordinary rates to resume. The leadirig city butcher declares that the Sydney consumers pay at least twenty-five per cent, more than they should for their meat, owing to the operations of the canning companies, including the American meat company in He claims that those companies are not only unfairly competing against the local carcase butchers, but are jeopardising the City's meat supply by forcing the prices to the artificial limit, Mr Holman (Premier) has definitely promised that the building of the North Shore bridge will be commenced next year, a special Act of Parliament being passed to raise the necessary funds.

The strike at the State shipbuilding yard continues. The unions submitted modified demands, but the fact that a number of strikers were replaced stands in the way of a settlement. <
Mr Glynn states that an analysis of the oil from Papua has shown deposits equal in the more important features to those from Java and Sumatra, which are regarded as the best in the world. Experts believe that at 1000 ft. the supplies will be sufficiently large to make the Papuan fields commercially successful.
