A YACHTING ACCIDENT. A YOUNG MAN'S NARROW ESCAPE. [Pee Press Association.] Christchurch, June 1. Three young men named Clarence Gilmore, James A. Anderson and Alex McCormick, went out in the IS-foot yacht Kiwi at Lyttelton yesterday, and after spending some time in the vicinity of Diamond Harbor, decided to return to port. On the return journey the boat capsized in the middle of the harbor owing to the yacht being caught in a strong westerly gust of wind. The boat, sank in a few minutes. Gilmore was in a had'way when tho mate of the schooner Eliza Firth, which had anchored in the stream from Kaipara in the morning observed tho party's plight and, with the assistance of a member of the crew, rowed off in a dinghy. Tho three men were taken on board, and Gilmore immediately collapsed, but resuscitation measures were used successfully, Auckland, June 1. A charge of having attempted to conceal the fact of tho birth of her child on May 8, was preferred against a young single woman, Mary Agnes .Brown, in the Police Court to-day. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence. Napier, June 1. At the annual meeting of tho Napier Licensing Committee to-day, the chairman announced that the committee had decided that at the next. annual meeting the licenses for the Clarendon and Criterion Hotels would not he renewed unless tho houses were re-built. Invercargill, June 1. Before Mr Hutchison, S.M., at Riverton to-day, a married woman, Nellie McCreath, was charged that, being the mother and having custody of Gladys McCreath, aged 4.1 years, she did wilfully ill-treat the child in a manner likely to cause it unnecessary suffering. From the evidence, it appeared that on May 11 the attention of a constable was directed to the child, and on examination lie found it a mass of bruises from head to heel, with some abrasions and marks about the face. The little one was taken to a doctor, who, upon examination, described it as a shocking case. The woman was Sued £lO and expenses, or in default two months' imprisonment with hard labor. The custody of the child was taken from her.
