Ari explosion in the New River Collieries Coy's, mine .at Becklc.v, West Virginia, entombed two hundred and fifty men in the six hundred feet level. A rescue crew promptly organised and rescued two men seriously injured, but they were unable to reach the others. The explosion was so severe that it was heard for miles distant.
