THE MAYOR AND MR PORRITT.
[To The Editor Stratford Post.] Sir,—Mr Porritt’s objection to the alteration made in the Lighting Committee’s report is not a valid one, lor the reason that the slight alteration made does not in any sense do away with what was desired to bo conveyed to the Minister for Public Works, namely, that the Electrical Supply Company largely interested themselves in forwarding the object of the petition in obtaining signatures. Mr Porritt, who is a director of the Electrical Supply Company, admits that lie obtained over one-third of the signatures on the petition forwarded to the Hon. Mr Eraser. That being so, why quibble about the alteration of a word? The only alteration made was that the words “taken round” were substituted for the word “circulated.” F may state, that if the petitions forwarded to the Minister for Public Works are likely to carry any weight with the Government, counter petitions may he sent, and in view of the contingency of counter-petitions being circulated for signature, 1 would ask ratepayers now being canvassed for their signatures to weigh very carefully which petition they are prepared to sign.—l am, etc., W. P. RIPE WOOD, Mavor.
