BOARD'S ANNUAL MEETING

Referring to the strike in his report to the annual meeting of the Harbor Board to-day, the chairman. Mr R. Fletcher, said the trouble in his opinion was caused by obstinacy on one part and stupidity on the other, and the results were disastrous to all concerned, as strikes generally were. Through a difficult and trying position, it' was his endeavor to hold the scale of justice evenly, and looking hack he had the consciousness and satisfaction of feeling that he had done his duty as a public representative". The Board's profit and loss statement showes a credit balance of £13,571 odd, as against £10,814 odd, an increase of £2756 odd. The financial position was eminently satisfac-j tory, the increase of earning from £216,025 to £237,293 shown being an advance of £21,268. Goods .inwards totalled, £535,0-10 tons, as against 489,416 tons, an increase of 9.31 per cent.—a record for the port. The total shipments of wool, skins, etc.. excluding transhipments, amounted to 301,050 as against 251,861, an increase of 19.5 per cent. The coal handled in the port was 548,852 tons, as against 502,499, :5h increase of 9.22 per cent.
