Professor David Head’s paper to the Royal Geographical Society on some unsolved problems of Antarctica, was largely technical. Referring to Shackleton’s new expedition he said it would bring back material of lasting scientific importance. He eulogised Mawson’s meteorlogical work and made reference to the Commonwealth retaining the wireless station at Macquarie Island. He received cheers. Sir Ernest Shackleton denies that Sir J..M. Barrie donated £IO,OOO to launch the expedition. The first donation of £35,000 was from an anonymous friend.
