TIMARU SESSIONS.

Timaru, February 3
At the opening of the criminal sessions this morning, Judge Henniston congratulated the grand jury and the district on the lightness of the calendar. Only three criminal cases had to be dealt with. Jas. Mitchell, who pleaded guilty in the Court below to a charge of setting fire to a cottage in Geraldine, asked, for a probation order, as he was muddled with drink and had a good character. The ‘Judge said tlife offence’ was too deliberate, and him to nine months’ imprisonment. Ivanhoe Price, horse-breaker, of Ashburton, pleaded guilty to the theft of a horse and trap and harness, yet said he did not steal them because he had hired them. He hired the turn-out at Mount Somers, and sold it at Addington. hie was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. In the third case (not completed), two men, one a taxicab driver, are charged with robbery with violence. The'prosecutor alleges that when lie was muddled with drink accused took him for a car ride into the country. One held him while the other took £7 15s out of his pockets and then put him out of the car to walk home.
WELLINGTON SESSION.
"Wellington, February A
At the Supreme Court, juries disagreed in the cases of John Edward Harrington and Samuel Thompson, charged with taking part in a riot and assaulting special constables'* during the recent strike. A now trial was ordered in each case.
