'l’lie steameij 1 , Achlibster, which, on arrival yesterday from Calcutta, was ordered into quarantine owing to having had cholera cases aboard, has a crew mainly”of Asiatics, with one oi- two African negroes, and her officers are Europeans. The Achlibster left Calcutta for Wellington on December 18, and on Christmas Day an Asiatic fireman contracted the disease in a severe form. Nothing could be done for him, and he died in a few hours. The body was buried at sea. Subsequently a few mild cases developed among other members of the crew, but stringent methods checked the epidemic. There have been no symptoms of the malady since December 27. All on board tlie Achlibster now are well. MAINTENANCE CASE. Auckland, January 28. There were unusual circumstances in a case in the Police Court, in which Ellen Georgina Perrin applied for aii order for maintenance against William Perrin. The defence raised the point that defendant’s first wife was living when he went through the form of marriage with complainant at Hawera. He then described himself as a widower, and stated tc his second wife that his first wife bad not been heard of for some years, and ho believed her dead. Three years later, in November. 189-1, the first wife appeared in Napier. Perrin gave her £BO, an 1 m consideration she left New* Zealand. In 19011 Perrin quarrelled with complainant, and they had not since lived together. There were three children of the union, ages ranging from 1 I to 2.‘1 years. In Christchurch recently, Perrin produced the certificate of his first marriage, in April, 1882.

Mr. (bitten, 5.1V1., said he must dis- V miss the application for maintenance, |j Ihi t the nature of the defence was such that he could not allow costs to : the defendant.
