THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
LAST YEAR'S RECORD. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright | [TJmtkd Press Association.] (Received 9.30 a.m.)
London, January 8
' Weddel's report on the frozen meat 'trade states: The general average !quotations for 1913 are the highest lon record. Australian supplies of i heel' and mutton are also records, it is unlikely 1914 will witness any furjther large expansion of general trade, ihut the demands for all kinds of |meats will probably be but little conitra'L'd, even if retail prices are perimanently raised. There are many i reasons for assuming that high values [will lie maintained, but labor troubles ,might be a disturbing element. Should the new market in the United States 'develop on expanding lines—which many anticipate—the result will be to emphasise the- inherent strength of sellers already in strong position.
The Colonial Consignment Company report that with the disappearance of the United States from the list of self-supporting countries, and several European countries initiating the importing of meat, competition for supplies are likely to place values permanently on a plane "higher than yet reached.
