The New York celebrations were the sanest and. quietest on record. The police arrested scores for attempting to play instruments and making hideous noises.
THE MONEY MARKET. London, January 2. The annual report of Mr R. Martin Holland, C. 8., hon. secretary of the Bankers’ Clearing House, states that the turnover of the Stock Exchange throughout the year indicates a decided depression and a continued fall m values and an absence of speculative commitments. An indication of a de clining trade boom is given by the set-back of the last quarter of the year. A DIAMOND ROBBERY. London, January/2. Mr Phillips, a Hatton Garden diamond dealer, who was carrying £2OOO worth of diamonds, was awaiting a train at Rosebery Avenue, when he was attacked by three men. Phillips, who is partly paralysed, raised the alarm, but bis assailants escaped with a parcel of diamonds valued at £4OO.
