STORM IN THE SOUTH.

Ashburton, November 28. A severe thunderstorm was experienced at Highbank, about 24 miles north-west of Ashburton, on Thu-sdav afternoon. The lightning fired a«Maw ' stack, and killed two ewes and a Jamb the wool of which was scattered for about 20 yards. The occupants of a . farmhouse near by were also considerably alarmed, the crockery on the table danced about violently. BOOKMAKER FINED. Auckland, November 28. At the Police Court this morning a young man, named Frank Grimstead, was charged with bookmaking on the Alexandra Park racecourse. ChiefDetective MacMahon stated that accused attended trotting races at Alexandra Park last week. Accused was lined €2O, it being a first offence.
