HOTELS CLOSED UNTIL TUESDAY [Per Press Association.] Wellington, November 21. A deputation of Licensed \ ictuallers waited on the Mayor and asked when the hotels would he re-opened. They, pointed out the great expense of keeping the staffs at full strength. Thev offered to put extra men on and to see that there wt\s no drunkenness. They would not sell liquor for consumption off the premises. The Mayor said that at present he could not altei the method of giving daily notice to shut the hotels. He would consider the application when the times were normal. In the meantime the hotels would remain closed until Tuesday. STRIKING WATERSIDERS IN TROUBLE. SENTENCES OF IMPRISONMENT. Wellington, November 21. Joseph Thomas, a waterside worker and a picket, who attempted to throw a shipping clerk into the harbour was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment. Thomas said he was merely carrying out his duties as a picket. William Lawton, a watersider, with one previous conviction for breaking and entering, who took a prominent part in the riot in front of Whitcombe and Tombs on October 30th, when the. specials were attacked, was sentenced to three months and remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence for the indictable offence. The new Drivers’ Union now has a membership of 140.
