WATER-LOADED BUTTER.

At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, attention was called to a statement in a Vancouver paper that New Zealand butter was being treated there by machinery until it was mad > to hold up to 28 per cent, of water. It was stated that the output of one firm of adulterated water-loaded butter was 1200 to ISOOlbs per day. The chamber decided to forward the correspondence on the subject .-to the Minister of Agriculture.

On Tuesday, the 7th inst., we held our usual fortnightly sale in our Stratford yards. We yarded 220 head mixed cattle, 200 of which we sold at the hammer or afterwards. The market for all young cattle is still quiet, but prices are firm. We quote as follows: —Yearling steers and in poor condition 32s 6d to Gss for fair cattle, yearling Shorthorn heifers 50s to 565, colored yearling heifers 72s 6d to 81s Gd, 2 year steers 89s to 94s 6d, 2 year empty heifers 74s to 77s 6d, store cows (young and well framed) G4s to 925, cows rather old and in low- condition 33s to 555, bulls 67s to 955. In the dairy pens there is no demand unless the heifers are well grown and close to profit. Prices as follows:—Heifers o fnice quality and close up to 125 s to 157 s 6d, good dairy cows up to 185 s. During the week we have sold privately at the following rates: Yearling steers 57s 6d to 665, yearling heifers, ordinary sorts, 52s Cd to 565, colored yearling heifers up to 92s 6d, 2 year old steers 90s to 97s 6d, a nice line of 142 store cows sold to an Awakino client at £4 11s lOd, springing heifers .127 s 6d, 1355, up to 200 s, good reliable dairy cows up to £l2.

Matthews, Bennett and Co. report that there was a full yarding of cattle in their Inglewood yards on Wednesday last. Good mixed yearlings £2 Is to £2 Ss, inferior do. £1 10s to £1 18s, yearling heifers £2 5s to £3 6s, yearling steers £2 8s to £3 3s, empty heifers £3 to £3 14s, store cows (old) £2 to £2 15s, good £3 10s to £4 17s, springers (old and backward) £3 10s to £4 15s, good do. £5 10s to £8 17s 6d, bulls £3 4s to” £9:'
