THE EDUCATION ACT.

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS. At present thfere is before tin House of Representatives a Bill ti amend the Education'"Act, in whicl two rather important provisions ar sought to be altered. At preseu nominations for positions on school committees are received at the annua meeting of householders, but the Bil before Parliament provides that no ruinations shall only lie received at these meetings if the number of nominations previously received falls short of the number to be elected The present law also provides for cer tain subsidies on bequests and volun tary contributions to district bigl schools, but the amending Bill provides that the subsidies shall be grant ed only on bequests and contribution? specifically made for the secondary de partment of such schools.

The Stratford School Committee heh a special meeting last night to con sider the Bill, there being present; Messrs. Smart (in the chair), Hancock. McMillan and Staples. In respect of the clause regarding district high schools the following resolution was passed on the motion oi Mr McMillan, seconded by Mr Smart: “That a letter of protest he sent to the Education Board, asking that the present section he retained.” It war decided that a copy of the resolution 1)6 also forwarded to Mr Hine.

Members expressed the opinion that people would not bequeath or contribute money for the secondary departemnt alone, and that if a change was necessary it would he preferable to have the subsidy confined to money contributed for the primary department.

The following resolution, moved by Mr Staples and seconded by Mr Hancock, was also carried:—“ r lhat the Committee draw the attention of the Education Board and the member ior the district to the clause re elections, and point out that it would He to the detriment of the schools in doing away with the interest taken in the householders’ meeting, and opening the door to cliqubm .and packing of committees.”
