An eccentric indivdual named El jah Henry Eretton, a Londoner, visited Oamaru yesterday and iiklulged'-'ir an escapade in protest, as,he put it at the high prices and ■ bad pay ii New Zealand. As an excuse'for dam aging property in and about towi valued at £l7, he pleaded that lie wr starving. He was, sentenced on si charges to terms aggregating sir months. Eretton was convicted of - : similar offence twelve months ago at Port Chalmers. Alcoholic drink doe; not enter into the case.

THE DEVON WRECK. Wellington, October 10. A salvage party of seven men hat a thrilling experience, at the wrecket Devon to-day. Last night a heav.v southerly came up and big" seas swep over the ship. This could only V done by sliding ashore on a hawser Three men got off in a ho’sun’s chair then Price and another three essayin' the trip. Their weight caused t v line to sag, and the basket wa; swept about by breakers. The haulinp line become fouled with some rocks, and the men decided to clamber ashore along the hawser. One named Affleck, became exhausted, and wa< washed away, but after some time drifted ashore, where the lightkeeper and others secured him. He was in a had state for a time and unconscious, hut later on recovered. Price also got washed away, hut managed, with some difficulty, to gain the beach. The Devon’s hack is now broken, tin decks are lifting and some of tin stern plating has gone.
