FIRE IN HOTEL
INMATES NARROW ESCAPE
BRIGADE’S GOOD WORK. [Per Press Association.] Wellington, October 11. Shortly before 4 o’clock: this morning a lire broke out m a large wooden private hotel in lugestre Street, adjoining the Brunswick Hotel. The outbreak evidently originated ir the main sitting room on the g.ounc
floor. A strong southerly wind fanned the flames, making the work of the brigade exceedingly difficult. fortunately the l fire was confined to the private hotel, which, with the exception of one end, was destroyed. The shingle rod of another lodging house adjoining caught alight, but by cutting a hole in the upper portion ot die building and pouring in a large quantity of water, the danger was soon over. Everyone in the private hotel had a narrow escape and lost everything. Mr and Mrs E. Lush by (the lessees and their three children were nearly suffocated. An elderly hoarder found his means of escape cut off and wit gob out by the firemen by the aid oi a ladder. Another man tried to get out by a back window, but was beaten back In the flames, and clambering over tin : ■•••-■ scrambled down the fire escape which was almost red hot, burning hi hands badly.
The building destroyed is owned In the 'Luxford Estate, and insured in the Commercial Union for £I7OO. The furniture is covered by a policy of £di)o ip. the New Zealand office. The Bushbys’ personal effects wen not insured.
Young’s lodging house, owned In Henry Larlse was insured in the National for £SOO, and the furniture ir. the Liverpool, London, and Globe 1o: £IOO.
