As a continuation of Fleet Week, the Government entertained the crews of the vesels at luncheon. Various other festivities were provided. Two thousand school children visited the ships to-day. The city- and the fleet are nightly illuminated.

CHEAPER CABLES. «

The Chamber of Commerce has decided to co-operate with other chambers urging a. conference of the Post-masters-General of Australia, New Zealand and Canada, to consider the whole question of cheaper cables with the United Kingdom via Canada. FEDERAL FINANCE. (Received 9.40 a.m.) Melbourne, October 9. The Federal Government proposes to raise a loan from trust funds of £3,080,000. The expenditure for the year will be £27,246,000.
