Walter Merrifield was committed for trial at Newcastle for murdering his partner, Clarence Kefford, who was killed through an explosion of gelignite in a room where he was sleeping. Merrifield told the police that he caused the explosion with the object of frightening Kefford, believing be was absent from tin room.
