FIRE LAST NIGHT.

IN BROADWAY PREMISES.

BRIGADE'S GOOD WORK

The Fire Brigade was called out about twenty minutes to six last night to deal with a tire which broke out ill the premises of Messrs Midlon and Marshall, "The Kash," Broadway. The outbreak was discovered by Mr Clayton, who occupies the adjoining premises, and he notified Mr C. J). Sole, who rang up the fire station. The Brigade turned out very promptly, and when they arrived flames were breaking out through the back door and the windows facing the right-of-way, a big volume of smoke being also in evidence. A lead of water was soon brought to bear on the seat of the fire, and in a few minutes the fire was completely under control. An examination of the premises tbls morning shows that the actual fire was confined to a spare room at

the hack of the shoo, in which a fair amount of reserve stock was stored. The fire appears to have started in the vicinity of the partition between this room and the shop, and it seems to have started fairly high up the wall and burnt downwards, as thej wallpaper nearest the floor is hardly burnt at all, while the whole papering further up was entirely burnt off. Only a portion of tho stock in the room was very badly damaged. The fire did not really enter the front shop and the damage there by smoke or water was very small. No indication can be given of the origin of the fire, everything being safe when the premises were closed at half-past five. The building is owned by Mr Newton King, and is insured for £SOO in the Phoenix office. The stock and fittings are insured for £IOO in the Phoenix office and for £2OO in the Guardian office.

The premises will remain closed for a few days.'
