Edward Neil Whitten, an undersized youth and an absconder from Burnham, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court J to three charges of breaking .and entering. In one ease he stole a lady’s handbag, valued at 10s, front a house in Fendalton, and in the second he stole a cash-box and contents, valued at 35s from a house in Richmond, and in the third, he Stole 15s from St. Peter’s Church, Riccarton. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. The Chief Detective said that there were Other charges which could be preferred against accused, but there would be no benefit is doing so.

Ii must be borne in mind that the law has to be enforced, and that ilia method of doing witli the magistrates, with jurisdiction I am unable to interfere.- Garnisheeing of wages is, however, I consider, a less rigorous ’ odttrse than detention in military custody in case of non-payment of fines.”
