3 fore the public in r. any ways, and not the least prominent form of scour- , ! ing attention has been by means of _ ! Court proceedings. A further batch of breaches were dealt with at the Court this morning, when fines of ten shillings were imposed on persons who had been found driving gigs with only one light or riding bicycles without a light. The S.M. (Mr Kenrick) said that as all tho offences had occurred previous to last Court day, when a warning was given that increased fines could be looked for, the fine would not in (the present instance be raised, but heavier fines would be inflicted foi future breaches. People should now know that it was necessary for gigs to carry two sidelights. M. McCullong, charged with driving a gig without lights, pleaded in extenuation that it was a hired gig and | that there were no sockets for the | lamps. He had come from the South j Island two years ago and, had taken j land in the backblocks, and the occasion in question was his first visit to Stratford. His Worship remarked that defend ant’s first visit to town had not been very lucky, and inflicted a fine of 10: with costs 7s. J. B. Murray pleaded guilty te driving a dray without sufficient lights He explained that he was carrying a light in his hand. He had been on a job out of town which lasted j longer' than he expected. A fine of 10s, with costs 7s, was imposed. P. James pleaded guilty to a similar offence on June 23rd. | Sergeant McNeely said that Jamer carried no lights at all. James said that he had been detained on a job and he had either tr leave his dray or come home as he did. He walked home on the side of the road and kept a good look-out. The S.M. said there was the furthei alternative of taking lights on al; occasions, so as to be prepared for ret timing after dark. A fine of £l, with costs 7s was imposed. For driving gigs without lights thcfollowing were fined 10s, with cost? 7s:—Thomas McDonald, Michael McDonald, Ivy Parker and John Protz. Similar fines were imposed on Margaret Cuthbertson and Harry Reid for riding bicycles without lights.
