TERRITORIAL GYMKHANA

SUCCESSFUL INAUGURATION. The first Territorial Gymkhana for the military groups 8 (Taranaki and Sing Country) and 6 (Wanganui) was held at the Showgrounds, Hawera, yesterday. The function was favored with excellent weather, and the attendance of the public was very satisfactory. The Prime Minister, Mr W. F. Massey, telegraphed his regret at being unable to be present owing to the opening of Parliament, and wishing the function every success.

Taking everything into consideration the degree of skill displayed in the military events was very creditable.

A large number of Territorial and staff officers had charge of arrangements, and everything was got off in good order. There were two rather nasty-looking spills at the hurdles in the Lloydhindsay competition, but no injuries resulted. The comic element was much in evidence in the obstacle race, and the pillow-fighting, the two clowns in the obstacle race being responsible for much merriment.

The band of the 2nd Regiment Mounted Rifles was in attendance under Bandmaster Buckley and rendered a number of selections in first-class style. Mr F. G. Treweek, secretary of the A. and P. Association, under whose auspices the Gymkhana was run, had everything well ordered and left nothing to be desired so far as his department was concerned.

In the morning the competitors marched to the Showground, and at the conclusion of the day’s sport marched hack to the railway station.
