DEFENCE OF THE EMPIRE.

o \ THE NAVAL BASES. London, May 20. With regard to the proposed Imperial squadron, the Admiralty intends that the respective governments contributing ships shall settle the itinerary of the squadron. Apparently there is some misunderstanding about Gibraltar as the base of the naval force, which is not tied to any port, but it is necessary for administrative purposes to choose a port where spare parts, reserves of ammunition and general stores can bo held. Gibraltar was chosen for the Imperial squadron, which really is an Imperial force and not an accession to the Home licet.
